Greeks, Etruscans and Early Viticulture
Greek settlers and Etruscan communities established extensive vineyard cultures across southern and central Italy.
Wine Country Guide
Italy
A mosaic of native grapes, historic appellations and distinctive regional wines stretching from the Alps to the Mediterranean.
Discover the country
Italy’s wine identity is rooted in extraordinary regional diversity. Vineyards extend through all twenty regions, from Alpine slopes and northern lakes to the rolling hills of central Italy and the volcanic, sunlit landscapes of the south and islands. Hundreds of native grapes produce wines ranging from elegant mountain whites and traditional-method sparkling wines to age-worthy reds, sweet wines and distinctive regional specialities.
01
The story
Wine History
Italian wine history spans more than three thousand years. Greek settlers expanded viticulture in southern Italy, while the Etruscans developed wine culture across central regions. Roman agriculture, trade and winemaking spread Italian wine throughout the ancient world. Monasteries, noble estates and farming communities preserved regional traditions after Rome’s decline. Modern appellation laws emerged during the twentieth century, followed by a quality revolution that combined indigenous grapes and traditional methods with improved vineyard management and precise cellar practices.
Wine Across an Empire
The Romans advanced vineyard cultivation, winemaking, storage and trade, carrying Italian wine culture throughout Europe.
Regional Traditions Take Shape
Monasteries, merchant families, landowners and rural communities preserved local grapes and developed recognisable regional wines.
Modern Appellation System
The introduction of DOC legislation formalised geographical origin, permitted grapes and production requirements.
Quality and Regional Revival
Lower yields, improved viticulture and renewed confidence in native varieties transformed the reputation and precision of Italian wine.

The landscape
Geography & Wine Regions
Italy forms a long peninsula extending from the Alps into the Mediterranean, with the Apennine Mountains running through its centre. Most vineyards are influenced by elevation, nearby mountains, lakes or surrounding seas. This combination creates countless mesoclimates and exposures. Soils include Alpine rock and glacial deposits, limestone and marl, clay, sand, volcanic ash, tuff and alluvial material, allowing neighbouring areas to produce markedly different wines.
Piedmont
An Alpine-influenced northwestern region known for Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Moscato and highly site-specific wines.
Tuscany
A central Italian landscape of hills, limestone, clay and coastal influences, led by Sangiovese-based reds.
Veneto
A diverse northeastern region producing Prosecco, Soave, Valpolicella, Amarone and wines from Lake Garda.
Friuli–Venezia Giulia
A northeastern region shaped by the Alps and Adriatic, particularly recognised for precise whites and skin-contact traditions.
Trentino–Alto Adige
Mountain vineyards and pronounced altitude support aromatic whites, elegant reds and traditional-method sparkling wines.
Lombardy
Home to Franciacorta, Valtellina and Oltrepò Pavese, combining Alpine, lake and continental vineyard environments.
Campania
A southern region of volcanic soils, mountains and coastal influence, distinguished by Aglianico, Fiano, Greco and Falanghina.
Puglia
A warm southeastern region known for generous Primitivo, Negroamaro and Nero di Troia wines alongside increasingly fresh coastal styles.
Sicily
A large Mediterranean island combining warm coastal vineyards, high elevations and the volcanic landscapes of Mount Etna.
Sardinia
An island region with maritime conditions, ancient varieties and distinctive wines based on Cannonau, Vermentino and Carignano.
Abruzzo
Mountain and Adriatic influences shape Montepulciano-based reds and increasingly expressive Trebbiano and Pecorino whites.
Umbria
A landlocked central region known for Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Grechetto and the historic white wines of Orvieto.
03
Growing conditions
Climate & Viticulture
Italy’s climate ranges from Alpine and cool continental conditions in the north to warm Mediterranean conditions in the south and islands. The peninsula’s length, mountainous spine and extensive coastline prevent any single climatic description from defining the country. Altitude, aspect and proximity to lakes or seas often moderate heat and create significant differences between neighbouring vineyards.
Climate
Alpine, continental and Mediterranean, depending on region
Altitude
Sea-level coastal sites to steep Alpine and Apennine vineyards above 1,000 metres
Rainfall
Variable, from wetter Alpine and northeastern areas to dry southern and island vineyards
Key influences
Alps, Apennines, Mediterranean and Adriatic seas, major lakes, elevation and vineyard aspect
Viticultural challenges
Spring frost, hail, humidity, fungal disease, summer heat, drought, erosion and increasingly unpredictable growing seasons

A pale-coloured but powerful Piedmontese grape associated with perfume, high acidity, firm tannins and exceptional ageing capacity.
Barbera
A high-acid red grape offering vivid cherry and plum fruit with relatively moderate tannins.
Corvina
The principal grape behind Valpolicella and Amarone, valued for sour cherry, herbs, freshness and suitability for drying.
Aglianico
A structured southern red variety producing dark, savoury and long-lived wines, particularly in Campania and Basilicata.
Montepulciano
A deeply coloured central Italian red grape best known through Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
Nero d’Avola
A leading Sicilian red grape producing ripe dark fruit, spice and styles ranging from supple to structured.

A central Italian white grape offering citrus, herbs, salinity and excellent ageing potential.
Fiano
An aromatic and textured southern white grape associated with orchard fruit, flowers, smoke and age-worthy acidity.
International varieties

Used for still wines and premium sparkling wines, especially in cooler northern and elevated vineyards.
Pinot Grigio
Widely planted in northeastern Italy and made in styles ranging from light and fresh to textured and copper-coloured.

Principal Wine Styles
Italy produces virtually every major wine style, but its defining strength lies in regional specificity. Native grapes, local food traditions and geographically precise appellations give even familiar styles a distinctly Italian identity.
Age-Worthy Red Wines
Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Aglianico, Sagrantino and other native grapes produce structured wines capable of long development.
Fresh Regional Whites
Alpine, coastal and elevated vineyards produce mineral, herbal and citrus-led wines from dozens of native white varieties.
Appassimento Wines
Partially dried grapes create concentrated dry or sweet wines, with Amarone and Recioto among the best-known examples.
Sparkling Wines
Italy produces tank-method Prosecco, traditional-method Franciacorta and Trentodoc, as well as Lambrusco and numerous local styles.
Rosé Wines
Regional rosati range from delicate northern Chiaretto to deeper-coloured Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo and southern coastal examples.
Sweet and Fortified Wines
Vin Santo, Passito, Recioto, Moscato d’Asti and Marsala reflect a wide range of grapes and traditional production methods.

Understanding the label
Wine Classification
Italian wine classification operates within the European Union’s protected-origin framework. DOC and DOCG wines fall under Protected Designation of Origin, while IGT corresponds to Protected Geographical Indication. Each registered denomination has its own production rules governing origin, permitted grapes, yields, winemaking and, where applicable, ageing. Terms such as Classico, Superiore and Riserva describe additional conditions within particular denominations rather than separate national quality levels.
01
Vino
General wine without a protected geographical indication; labels may identify colour or style but have fewer origin requirements.
02
IGT / IGP
Indicazione Geografica Tipica identifies wine connected to a broader geographical area with defined production requirements.
03
DOC / DOP
Denominazione di Origine Controllata regulates wine from a defined origin, including grapes, yields and production methods.
04
DOCG / DOP
Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita is Italy’s traditional highest designation and includes additional controls and approval procedures.

Food & Wine Culture
Italian wine is inseparable from regional food culture. Wines developed alongside local ingredients, cooking methods and seasonal meals rather than as isolated luxury products. High-acid reds complement tomato, meat and aged cheese; mineral whites suit seafood and vegetables; sparkling wines accompany aperitivo and fried foods; while sweet wines are traditionally served with regional pastries, nuts or cheeses.

What Defines the Wines of Italy
Italy’s wines are defined by regionality: a vast collection of native grapes interpreted through local landscapes, appellations, traditions and food cultures. Rather than one national style, Italy offers an intricate wine map in which altitude, soil, climate and generations of regional practice give each place a recognisable identity.
