The story
Wine History
Italian wine history spans more than three thousand years. Greek settlers expanded viticulture in southern Italy, while the Etruscans developed wine culture across central regions. Roman agriculture, trade and winemaking spread Italian wine throughout the ancient world. Monasteries, noble estates and farming communities preserved regional traditions after Rome’s decline. Modern appellation laws emerged during the twentieth century, followed by a quality revolution that combined indigenous grapes and traditional methods with improved vineyard management and precise cellar practices.

The landscape
Geography & Wine Regions
Italy forms a long peninsula extending from the Alps into the Mediterranean, with the Apennine Mountains running through its centre. Most vineyards are influenced by elevation, nearby mountains, lakes or surrounding seas. This combination creates countless mesoclimates and exposures. Soils include Alpine rock and glacial deposits, limestone and marl, clay, sand, volcanic ash, tuff and alluvial material, allowing neighbouring areas to produce markedly different wines.
Piedmont
An Alpine-influenced northwestern region known for Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Moscato and highly site-specific wines.
Tuscany
A central Italian landscape of hills, limestone, clay and coastal influences, led by Sangiovese-based reds.
Veneto

Growing conditions
Climate & Viticulture
Italy’s climate ranges from Alpine and cool continental conditions in the north to warm Mediterranean conditions in the south and islands. The peninsula’s length, mountainous spine and extensive coastline prevent any single climatic description from defining the country. Sangiovese
Italy’s most widely recognised native red grape, producing cherry-led, savoury wines with lively acidity and firm tannins.
Nebbiolo
A pale-coloured but powerful Piedmontese grape associated with perfume, high acidity, firm tannins and exceptional ageing capacity.
Barbera
A high-acid red grape offering vivid cherry and plum fruit with relatively moderate tannins.
Corvina
The principal grape behind Valpolicella and Amarone, valued for sour cherry, herbs, freshness and suitability for drying.
Aglianico
A structured southern red variety producing dark, savoury and long-lived wines, particularly in Campania and Basilicata.
Montepulciano
A deeply coloured central Italian red grape best known through Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
Nero d’Avola

Chardonnay
Used for still wines and premium sparkling wines, especially in cooler northern and elevated vineyards.
Pinot Grigio
Widely planted in northeastern Italy and made in styles ranging from light and fresh to textured and copper-coloured.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Important in parts of Tuscany, Veneto, Friuli and Sicily, both as a varietal wine and in blends.
Merlot

Understanding the label
Wine Classification
Italian wine classification operates within the European Union’s protected-origin framework. DOC and DOCG wines fall under Protected Designation of Origin, while IGT corresponds to Protected Geographical Indication. Each registered denomination has its own production rules governing origin, permitted grapes, yields, winemaking and, where applicable, ageing. Terms such as Classico, Superiore and Riserva describe additional conditions within particular denominations rather than separate national quality levels.
