Red Wine Grape

Susumaniello

Susumaniello is a rare red grape native to Puglia, particularly associated with Salento and the province of Brindisi. The variety is known for deeply coloured wines, dark fruit, fresh acidity and firm but approachable tannins. Its name is commonly understood to derive from the Italian word for a donkey. The traditional explanation is that, just like the donkeys once used to transport grapes during harvest, this naturally high-yielding grape variety is capable of carrying remarkably heavy loads. Once valued mainly for its productivity and often used in blends, Susumaniello declined significantly before being rediscovered by modern Puglian producers for its distinctive character and quality potential.

What to Expect in the Glass

Deeply coloured, energetic red wines combining ripe dark fruit with fresh acidity and structured tannins. Younger wines can be juicy and vibrant, while lower-yielding old vines and oak ageing can produce more concentrated and complex expressions. Susumaniello's name is part of its story: it is traditionally linked to the donkey, reflecting the grape's historical ability to bear exceptionally heavy crop loads.
