Product Summary
Schola Sarmenti Antièri is a contemporary expression of 100% Susumaniello, one of Puglia's most fascinating native grape varieties. Once cultivated for its naturally high yields before falling into near obscurity, Susumaniello has experienced a remarkable revival, producing wines of exceptional concentration, freshness and elegance when carefully managed. Sourced from 10-year-old Guyot-trained vineyards in Salento, the wine is hand-harvested before spending 12 months in French oak tonneaux, creating a refined balance between vibrant fruit, spice and structure.
🍷 Tasting Notes: Aromas of blackberry, black cherry and ripe blueberry are layered with violet, Mediterranean herbs and cracked black pepper. Twelve months in French oak tonneaux contribute notes of vanilla, cocoa and sweet spice, while the palate remains fresh, elegant and beautifully balanced with silky tannins.
🍽️ Food Pairings: Grilled lamb, roast beef, mushroom risotto, aged Pecorino, beef rendang, roast duck and chargrilled meats.
🌡️ Serve at: 16–18°C

Aroma & Palate
The bouquet opens with ripe blackberry, black cherry and blueberry before revealing layers of violet, Mediterranean herbs, black pepper and subtle liquorice. Gentle maturation in French oak tonneaux contributes hints of vanilla, cocoa and baking spice without overshadowing the fruit. The palate is smooth and concentrated, combining generous dark fruit with lively acidity and refined tannins that give the wine both freshness and structure.
Body
Medium to full-bodied with a silky texture, polished tannins and excellent balance between fruit concentration and acidity.
Finish
Long and persistent, finishing with ripe black fruits, gentle spice, cocoa and a savoury mineral note that reflects the limestone soils of Salento.
Why This Wine Matters
Susumaniello is one of Italy's great rediscovered grape varieties. For decades it was largely overlooked because of its naturally high yields in youth, yet growers later discovered that as the vines mature, production falls dramatically while fruit quality increases. This transformation has made Susumaniello one of Puglia's most exciting native grapes.
Schola Sarmenti has embraced this revival by focusing on careful vineyard management and restrained winemaking rather than excessive extraction. The result is Antièri—a wine that combines the generosity expected from Southern Italy with freshness, elegance and remarkable drinkability. It offers an excellent introduction to a variety that is rapidly earning international recognition.
