Morlet The Urban Professor Chardonnay 2022 is a small-production, estate-grown Chardonnay from Wilyabrup in Margaret River, Western Australia. Produced from vines planted in 1999, the fruit is hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed before undergoing wild fermentation in Burgundian barrels. French oak barriques, including 33% new oak, and extended time on fine lees build texture without sacrificing freshness.

🍷 Tasting Notes: Nectarine, orange blossom and subtle nougat lead the nose, joined by flinty mineral notes. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and focused, with grapefruit, brioche and roasted cashew layered over a distinctive saline acidity. Barrel fermentation and lees ageing provide depth and creaminess while the finish remains bright, precise and long.

🍽️ Food Pairings: Crayfish, porcini risotto, rich fish, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, grilled cauliflower, butter prawns and seafood pasta.

🌡️ Serve at: 10–12°C

🍇 Grape: 100% Chardonnay | Appellation: Margaret River | Subregion: Wilyabrup | Country: Australia | Alcohol: 13%

Tasting Experience

Colour

Pale lemon-green.

Aroma & Palate

Lifted nectarine and orange blossom are joined by nougat, flint and roasted cashew. The palate combines ripe stone fruit and grapefruit with brioche-like complexity from barrel fermentation and extended lees contact. Saline acidity provides freshness and definition, balancing the wine's creamy texture and oak-derived richness.

Body

Medium-bodied, textural yet fresh and focused.

Finish

Long and precise, with lingering nectarine, grapefruit, brioche, cashew and saline freshness.

Why This Wine Matters

Margaret River has established an international reputation for Chardonnay, and Wilyabrup is one of its most recognised viticultural areas.

The Urban Professor is produced from just 1.13 hectares of estate Chardonnay planted in 1999, with the 2022 fruit harvested by hand on 25 February. Whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation, French oak and extended fine-lees contact give the wine complexity while retaining the freshness and precision of the vineyard.

Morlet also follows a minimal-intervention approach in the vineyard, and its Chardonnay vineyards are now NASAA-certified organic.
