What Is Vranec Wine? Singapore's Best-Kept Secret

There's a wine sitting in our cellar right now that most people in Singapore have never heard of. It has a Vivino rating of 4.5, an ink-dark ruby colour, and tannins that make serious Bordeaux drinkers sit up and pay attention. It costs $60.

It's called Vranec. And if you haven't tried it, you're in for a very good evening.

The Name Means 'Black Stallion'

Vranec (pronounced VRAH-nets) is the signature red grape of North Macedonia — a small, landlocked country in the Balkans that has been making wine for over 4,000 years. The name translates to 'black stallion' in Macedonian, a nod to the grape's intense colour and untamed character.

It's also sometimes called the 'Black Wine' — and once you've held a glass up to the light and seen that deep, almost opaque ruby, you'll understand why.

What Does Vranec Taste Like?

Vranec is bold, structured, and built for food. Here's what to expect in the glass:

Colour: Deep ruby to near-black, with purple highlights in younger vintages

Nose: Dark plum, wild berries, a hint of dried herbs and oak spice

Palate: Rich and full-bodied, with firm tannins, dark fruit and a long finish

Reserve styles: Notes of chocolate, coffee, leather and liquorice

Think of it as somewhere between a Malbec and a Cabernet Sauvignon — but with its own unmistakable Balkan soul.

Why Vranec Thrives in Singapore

Full-bodied reds with real structure can be tricky in Singapore's heat — but Vranec is surprisingly versatile. Serve it slightly below room temperature (around 16–18°C), pair it with grilled meats, lamb rendang, or even a good beef bak kut teh, and it absolutely sings.

It also pairs wonderfully with the bold, umami-rich flavours common across Asian cuisine — something many European reds struggle with.
